I’m not going to pretend to be a Feng Shui expert, but if there’s one thing I understand physically and emotionally, it’s energy. I feel it when I practice yoga, when I enter a new space and encounter new people. The build up of emotions that we all experience sometimes are all types of energy. I can link some helpful articles for you down below if you’d like to get into the nitty-gritty of it, but here’s a simplified overview for you if you’re short on time.
In Feng Shui, our homes and each room within our home is divided into 9 sections. The map used to define these sections is called a Bagwa and each section pertains to an aspect of out lives: Career, Travel, Knowledge, Creativity, Health, Family, Relationships, Fame, and Wealth. So if you imagine the flow of energy as something similar to the way the wind moves through space, you can create a picture of how the way we maintain our homes can prevent energy from passing through. Closed off passageways, messy and unorganized piles, or the dust and mildow that collects in places that rarely get any attention. Each aspect of your life, like each area of your home, deserves some love and attention.

Just as I ask my clients to do in our first few sessions, I’d reccommend taking some time to go through those forgotten areas one by one and tidy them up a bit. Here are a few examples:
- Something as simple as a quick sweep and mop cleans away the old energy that has settled over time. Dust out those cobwebs and open up those windows to bring the warmth back in.
- A bright and welcoming entryway can invite fresh energy in while adding some decorative pieces brings some joy to your life. Flowers or a simple statue can be all you need to cheer the place up a little bit.
- Greenery in the bathroom will limit the amount of good energy that gets washed down the drain. We can’t always control which area of our bagwa the bathroom falls into, but we can take steps to reduce any negative effects by keeping the door and toilet lid closed or adding a mirror, to reflect energy back into the rest of the house.
- If you have a lot of clothing or rarely used equipment, consider neatly storing them until the appropriate season returns. Blockages in our walking path will likewise block energy flow. Just like if we sprain our ankle, we can no longer balance like we used to until it’s healed.
- As you begin to integrate these tips, take note of how your mental and emotional states adjust as well. When something comes up, you might be able to find an adjustment you can make in your home to help you find clarity. Personally, I noticed when laundry starts piling up, I get a little scatterbrained. Once I’ve washed and folded the load, it’s as if a shelf in my mind has been dusted off and I can find what I was looking for.
For those times when you’re not sure where the imbalance is coming from and you’ve done everything you can, Reiki can be a helpful option to clear energy blocks within the body. By getting into alignment with Reiki energy, we can reach those area of ourself that need a little more time and attention. This is why I love to offer a free mini session to my Wellness Warriors each month into the Better Balance + Flow Community.
