The Secret Power of Adaptogens and How They Benefit Your Health

It’s likely you’ve heard talk about adaptogens when looking into various diets and wellness routines, but what exactly are they?

What are adaptogens?

To put it simply, adaptogens are a form of herbal medicine and a natural herbal solution to help the body adapt to different forms of physical, chemical, or biological stress, while restoring normal physiological functioning.

These non-toxic plants and roots have been used in ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, and have been having a bit of a revival recently.

There are around 70 different herbal plants which are considered adaptogens and they can be eaten as part of your regular meals, brewed into teas, or taken as supplements.

Essentially, adaptogens can tweak hormone production, as well as physiological responses to stress to make sure that your body is functioning as it should, which sounds pretty good, right?

Moreover, adaptogens have been said to help increase your focus, boost energy, and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. They provide a way to bring you back to balance whether you’re feeling fatigued or anxious.

What are the best adaptogens?

With around 70 different herbs out there, there are a few to choose from. Here are some of the main ones to get you started:

  • Adaptogens to boost the immune system: herbs such as Astragalus, Reishi mushrooms, and ginseng have been found to boost immunity
  • Adaptogens to ease anxiety: Ashwagandha, Tulsi (holy basil), Rhodiola Rosea, are all said to reduce levels of stress and anxiety
  • Adaptogens to boost energy: herbs such as Siberian Ginseng, Maca, and Licorice all contain energy boosting properties that can help give you a little lift

How do you take adaptogens?

Adaptogens can be taken in either raw form, supplements, powders, or brewed into teas and tinctures.

If you’re taking adaptogens in raw form or powders, then you can simply add them to your meals or smoothies.

I would suggest starting with one adaptogen and starting to slowly introduce it into your diet in small amounts to see what effect it has one you. Always do your research before buying.

Takeaway

Adaptogens aren’t a quick fix, but rather they help your body to slowly build up resilience over time, so it’s best to take it slow and make a note of the effects. As always, consistency is key!

If you’re considering taking adaptogens to ease chronic stress or anxiety, then bear in mind that it’s worthwhile looking at the root cause of this stress and anxiety. Adaptogens might well be able to help you in the short term, but it’s worth addressing the issue to resolve it in the long term.

As with everything, nothing beats a good diet and healthy exercise routine, adaptogens can help enhance your wellbeing, but they aren’t a substitute for an overall healthy lifestyle!
