5 Ways Decluttering can Help to De-Stress

The thing about clutter is that it doesn’t just take up physical space, but it also takes up mental, and spiritual space too. Our homes and minds can become calmer and more peaceful by taking some time to declutter. An organized space can also help us to de-stress and feel less distracted by everything around us. You don’t need to wait for a change in the season to spring-clean, try spending 5-10 minutes organizing and getting rid of built-up clutter every day instead.

The Benefits of Decluttering

We’re spending more time in our homes and if our space is full of mess or an abundance of things, it can end up adding extra stress to our lives. Here are some benefits of keeping your surroundings organized:

  • Improved focus: Getting rid of visual clutter can help you concentrate better. It’s also less distracting and you’ll be able to find what you need more easily.
  • Space for new beginnings: Cleaning up clutter allows us to clear space for something new.
  • Reduced anxiety: By creating a clutter-free space, you can create a serene environment. Our outer environment can sometimes mirror our mental environment, so if you’re feeling overwhelmed or uncertain, try tidying up one area of a room to improve your feelings of safety and confidence.
  • Mindfulness: By taking note of which areas in your environment need a little extra attention, you can develop a habit of checking in with how you’re certain things affect you and what might be contributing to those feelings. This help you to be more conscious and self-aware in other areas of your life.
  • Higher self-esteem and confidence: Decluttering your space gives you a sense of accomplishment and helps you to feel more competent. Have a big to-do list? Try tidying up a desk drawer or kitchen table to give yourself some momentum to tackle bigger tasks.

Decluttering tips

I’ve put together some tips for you to help clear up your clutter and set yourself up with a decluttering routine:

Start small

Creating a clutter-free space doesn’t need to involve momentous change. Start with one drawer, spend some time deciding what you want to keep and what you can give away, and take it from there.

Make your bed every day

Making your bed each morning can set you up for a positive and productive day ahead. A clean and tidy bedroom evokes a feeling of peace and calm, so you will likely start sleeping better too.

Get motivated

A messy environment can be a visual representation of your state of mind. It represents something that isn’t yet completed, which can ultimately lead to stress. By decluttering you’re getting things done, which in turn will give you a sense of accomplishment. This will leave you feeling energized and ready to tackle more goals.

Declutter your closet

A clutter-free closet will help you to save time in the morning and leave you feeling stress-free. Let go of clothes you haven’t worn in the past 12-24 months by donating or selling them online. Be decisive. If you’re torn then keep pieces you’re unsure about for another 6 months. Once the time’s up and if you still haven’t worn them, they’re out.

Little and often

You don’t have to wait for the spring, it’s better to set yourself up with a small daily declutter routine instead. Spend an extra few minutes each day by tidying up after yourself, wiping surfaces, and organizing. Small daily actions build up over time into habits, helping you to keep a clutter-free and stress-free space for yourself.
