The first thing you’re probably wondering is what is the difference between Affirmations and Afformations.

You’ve likely come across some version of Gratitude or Positive Affirmation app at some point in your scroll through Google Play or the App Store. These apps are designed to help you get into a better mindset, to allow you to have a happier day. Affirmations are statements of outcomes you would like to have, except that they are stated in the present tense, such as:
- I accept that Happiness is my true nature
- I am allowing myself to feel good
- I see abundance all around me
- I am finding something to be grateful for every day
- I attract good, loving, kind people into my life
These apps often come with their own catalogue of sayings for you to use, but they also allow you to create your own. By repeating Affirmations daily, they can help some people to counteract the negative thoughts and self-talk they experience. The intention is to help your mind learn how to speak more kindly to yourself, increasing your self-esteem, and allowing you to recognize more positive experiences in your life. From this state of mind, many people are able to achieve more of their goals because they are no longer holding themselves back due to fear of failure or disappointment.

How do Afformations differ from Affirmations?
If you’ve never heard this term before, you’re not alone. Where Affirmations are statements of positive intentions, Afformations are questions designed to change the way you think on a subconscious level. By asking open-ended questions to yourself, your mind will be compelled to look for the answers. These questions might look like:
- Why do I feel so grateful today?
- Why do I love my partner so much?
- Why is it so easy to lose weight?
- Why do I feel so happy when I wake up?
- Why am I such a strong leader?
Some would argue that these are more effective because they put your mind in a position to focus on what is right with you while searching for the answer.
If you’d like to give it a try, start with 5-10 phrases to repeat each morning upon waking for a week and notice how it changes your perspective. Whether you choose to use Affirmations or Afformations, both have the ability to change the way you think in a positive way, enabling you to feel better accomplish more.
